Prologue

She lay on a mattress atop a scaffolding platform five metres above the ground. The hand crafted sniper rifle pulled tight against her right shoulder. Through the telescopic sight she could see a cantaloupe on a bird table thirty-five metres away. She squeezed the trigger and felt the rifle kick back through the padding on her shoulder; the sound of the shot echoed through the building.

Her partner watching the cantaloupe through a high speed digital camera, replayed the shot. The more conventional target behind the fruit had a hole above and to the left of the bull’s eye.

“High and left” came through the small earpiece.

“Not a great deal, two centimetres up four left.”

She made a small adjustment to the sight and settled down again. This time the cantaloupe exploded.

“Still slightly left.”

More adjustment to the sight.

The third shot was dead centre.

Five shots and five cantaloupes later they were satisfied.

taosgw74: If this is the authors first attempt at writing, I'm floored. I was engrossed in the plot from the get go.

cuzley: I enjoyed this read, the romance and the "who done it" worked well together, I would recommend this story to both romance and mystery readers .

kim: This is great! Maybe it could just be a little more specific. One of the keys to great writing is describing things in detail. I think you're off to a great start. I wish you much luck.

C.K. Bachman: Just read the first chapter. Love how the main character thinks and is conflicted over his wife and the trickery he uses on her.

Atractivo Sumit: The story is an amazing blend of what we call natural, plain romance along with subtle emotions and interesting twists. The plot is so beautifully interwoven.

Felisa Yoder Osburn: I really enjoyed the story. Civil War stories are some of my favorites and the intertwining of the past with current times was wonderful. I look forward to reading the next stories.

Rachel Mc Donald: This was an awesome book a real page turner couldn't put it down . The characters all had a good back story . I love these kind of books and would read it if you decided to write a follow up book . Excellent work

Gayle Gunderson Boyce: I loved the book. Couldn't stop reading it. The story was good with a strong build up of suspense and sense of urgency to catch the killer. All clues pointed to Talbot yet enough things didn't add up to keep us looking and thinking. Jack Creed is a likeable character with lots of gut experience. ...

Kayresia A. Bass: Loved it. Author did some insane research to bring this story to life. A little short for my taste, but an awesome story nonetheless. A few missing periods, and a few missing ending quotation marks, but not enough to take away from the story.Keep going. Add more detail to your future stories and ...

Sara Grover: When I first started reading, it was a bit slow; though only because it was so information intense and fast-paced in trying to describe how this complex galactic corporation/government like entity controls known space. Samantha Speed: There were several punctuation, grammar, and missing word problems but it did not detract from the story. This story was very well done, enjoyable, and had an interesting enough plot.
