Kira has been a slave, kept in the cold and dark world of the Hidden City for as long as she can remember. Now she is coming of age, being traded off to the highest bidder, finding herself in one of the worst positions possible. She will find herself having to make a deadly decision. Trust in one of the very kind that has suppressed her for so long to free her, risking death. Or resign herself to a fate of daily torture, and depravity. Her heart has never known any kind of love, and when she falls for the wrong man, will it be her end or her beginning?

Prologue

You may not realize it, but there is a world beyond your own. One that lives out of sight, hidden. A world full of sinister temptations and dangerous creatures. A supernatural world. Demons roam the world all around you, blending in with you, at least for those who can. For all you know, your mailman could be a Demon.

It is in this darkly alluring side of existence that our story starts, in a dark dank room in a small house. It lies just beyond the edge of nowhere, in a city for Demons. A city that exists beyond the bounds of human maps. A place that is not a place. An in between, where everything exists, and yet nothing does at the same time.

Sitting in this dusty hovel on the outskirts of the Hidden City, are three old Demons. Outcasts, powerless and thrown to the edges of their existence, they desperately seek the power they need to climb to the top, to rule. Perhaps that power can be found right before their eyes.

The three Demons looked to each other, eyes gleaming with malice. "This one we shall keep." His gaze shifted to the small wrapped bundle between them, a young baby girl, hair as fine as silk, golden in color. Beautiful topaz eyes gleamed up at them, but they did not care for her beauty. They cared only for her soul.

For to their eyes, she shone like a beacon. A purer soul than they had seen in a long time. One worth more than they could ever realize. They all nodded, putrid and disfigured faces hidden beneath their black hoods. Only their bright, glowing red eyes betrayed their nature. One of them reached forward with an oddly shaped hand to scoop up the child.

"I will take her with me."

"Yes." Another agreed. "You are the least likely of us to taint her soul." The baby smiled up at the grotesque face before her, completely and blissfully unaware of the life that lay before her. Of the danger that she faced.

And so it was that the child grew with no family, no home, no human life. Instead raised into slavery, to serve the minions of the Underworld, for eternity. There would be no peace in death for her, as she would come to learn. They would take her soul as well, drain the energy from it, and turn it into a Husk.

They held many already, Husks, mere shells of their human counterpart, drained of all life and emotion. Perfectly obedient, demonic Renfields. She knew nothing of tenderness, love. Though deep down, she yearned for it.

Demons thrive on the power that lies in the human soul, either in tainting it, until it is nothing but black, or in consuming it until nothing but a Husk is left behind.
