Blurb

Life in Lakevale was pleasantly dull for Bryce and his cousin Jeradon. Nothing ever seemed to happen there and that was exactly how Bryce liked it. He wanted nothing to do with his cousin's constant longing for adventure, or the monsters that plagued their world, but when Jeradon gets his wish, Bryce unfortunately has to learn just how fleeting the comforts of home really are.

Prologue

Lislow was a quaint place inhabited by a whole array of people, living together across varying lands. It might have looked like a peaceful place at first glance, with quiet forests, full with wild life and its grassy plains under towering mountains. (Well, there are also the frigidly cold Nothernlands and scorching hot deserts, but I’m sure I’ll mention that later.)

After that first glance you’d be entirely wrong. If you stared at it a moment longer, you’d begin to notice it was a place full of insufferable people who waged war for illogical reasons each claiming it was to stop war and all of it was for peace.

They claimed peace was possible, even though it never actually happened. Oh how much they claimed and how hard they pretended to try... but it never came to be. I wonder if I knew why all along... to me it was simple once you think about it. War comes from only one thing, Hate. We always have the desire to fight against those things we hate, whether we hate them for a valid reason or not is a different rant for a different day, nonetheless as people it is only in our nature to hate.

Hate comes from many things. We will always hate what we do not understand. We will always hate those that hurt us or wrong us. No matter how hard we try to hide it, hate will always be there, and with it comes a yearning to fight it. There is nothing we can do about it, it’s our very nature. The only thing we can do is be prepared for the battle.

War is inevitable. The only thing we can do is protect what is ours.
