Chapter One: The First Years

“Hey there Princess!” a male voice called out from below me making me look up from where I’d had my head buried in my arms.

“Not now Rex,” I mumbled as I tried to go back to crying. “Just leave me alone,” I felt the branches below the one I was sitting on shake, then soon after I felt a hand on my knee.

“Aw come on Princess don’t be like that,” I glared into his smiling face. He leaned in close to me and before I could react he’d kissed my cheek. “See you later Princess!” he called out as he dropped to the ground below.

“Rex Carter Macintyre!” I screeched as I dropped down after him. Then I had to take off at a sprint to try and catch him. “Get back here you son of a gun!” his only immediate reply was a loud almost bark of laughter.

“Not a chance Princess!” he called back, “I value my hide too much!” I couldn’t help it, I burst out laughing and wound up on the ground. I was trying to stop laughing, but no luck. It was getting hard to breath, when I heard two all too familiar voices.

“Hey look at the farm girl! Rolling around on the ground like some kind of animal!” and just like that I was surrounded by laughter and it wasn’t my own. “Why don’t you just go back to your home planet?!” this remark was followed by even more laughter. I could feel tears start to form in my eyes but I refused to let them fall.

‘I won’t give in to them, I won’t!’ but my mental battle was lost long before it began, and the tears started to fall. Rex had stopped and was looking back at me. “Leave me alone,” my voice was nothing more than a whisper. I tried to get up and run back to the tree, but I was no sooner up when they pushed me back down.

“Aw what’s the matter farm girl?” one of the other girls cackled, “We’re just having some fun,” I could still feel the tears sliding down my cheeks. “Aw, the poor little reject, she’s crying,” this made the rest of their little group laugh.

I guess that’s what pushed me over the edge. The next thing I know, I’m just sobbing. Getting up, I took off running, their scathing remarks flying after me. I was back up in the tree my head buried in my arms, my knees tucked against my chest. “Why, why, why?” I just kept crying and repeating the word why over and over and over.

Now would anyone out there like to take a gamble at how old I was? No? I was only five, I was still in freaking kindergarten. Now how old would you guess the group was? Fourteen and fifteen year old’s who were only picking on me because they didn’t like my cousins.
